How Newspapers Are Dealing With The Digital Age
It used to be that if you wanted to find out what was going on in your local area you went to a shop and bought a newspaper. There were so many newspapers out there offering different points of view due to political affiliations or those dedicated to economics, sport and more.
However, due to being in the digital age the sales of newspapers in many cases has declined dramatically. They now often rely on money from the advertising within the paper and this is still seen as a valuable place for a business to have their name.
Now though more and more of them are trying to embrace the new technology by offering a lot of their content on the internet. People are now quite likely to check out various stories online and also if there is a particular event they can also read what several newspapers are saying about it.
It used to be that this was entirely free and again they tried to make money through online advertising due to the amount of hits they could get on a daily basis. This is now becoming a lot more unsustainable for them and there is a gradual shift towards people having to subscribe in order to access it.
There was a fear about how it would affect online viewing of the news however in the United Kingdom the Times newspaper recently introduced a subscription fee with a reasonable amount of success. They generated over one hundred thousand subscribers and this can represent a substantial monthly income for newspapers if it is replicated.
The general feeling is that people are coming around to the idea of having to pay to read their news just as there is a move more towards paying for your music rather than just for free. The real advantage if the convenience as whenever you want to read something you just need to go online and do not have to consider going outside in the cold and rain.
